Hundreds attend funeral of Walter Scott

Courtney King never knew Walter Scott.

The California native drove ten hours from Mississippi, joining hundreds who attended his funeral Saturday.

"We wanted to support the family and stand in solidarity against police brutality," she said.

Saturday's funeral for the 50-year-old father of four was held at 11 a.m. at W.O.R.D. Ministries Christian Center in Summerville, one week after his death.

Scott was fatally shot on the morning of April 4 by North Charleston police officer Michael Slager, 33, following a traffic stop. Witness video showed Slager fire eight shots at Scott's back while the man attempted to run from the officer.

According to the Charleston County Coroner's Office, Scott died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds to the back.

"You can't place all policeman in the box," added Evangelist Loretta Gregg of West Ashley.

"You have some good and some bad, and that's in every department."

Carla Justice, a family friend, who grew up next door to Walter Scott, is still coming to grips with his death.

"I didn't live with them when I grew up, but they were there, and I knew they were there, and I could count on them."

"This is such a tragedy, not for their family, and our family, but for the community."

Scott will be laid to rest at Live Oak Memorial Gardens in West Ashley.

Al Sharpton on Walter Scott shooting: 'It's not about black and white, it's about right and wrong'

Civil Rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton said the fatal officer-involved shooting of Walter Scott was "not about black and white, it's about right and wrong." 

The National Action Network president spoke on Sunday morning at the Charity Baptist Church in North Charleston where he commended North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey and Police Chief Eddie Driggers, who were both in attendance, for the arrest of former police officer Michael Slager in Scott's death.

"What this mayor did is what we've asked mayors to do all over the country. Not 'do us a favor,' just enforce the law," Sharpton said.

Sharpton called for more black officers in the North Charleston Police Department and told church members to not let presidential candidates come to South Carolina without talking about police accountability.

"I didn't come to start trouble, I came to stop trouble," Sharpton said.

Sharpton told the congregation that he was not anti-police, but "anti-police brutality" and referenced not only the video which captured Scott's shooting but other videos involving police that have made national news.

"There's been videos in other places, and they would not arrest them and charge them," Sharpton said."At least in the deep south, now you've got a bar that you've got to reach all over this country...to quit playing with the law. Either enforce the law or get out of law enforcement."

Sharpton also addressed the National Bar Association's announcement that they were seeking the immediate arrest of North Charleston police officer Clarence Habersham who responded to the shooting on the cause that he "left material facts out of his report to police." 

"A man writing false reports, handing it to his superiors should not expect his superiors to cover up for him including a black cop," Sharpton said."If they're lying, you go where the liars go. It's not about white cop, black cop. It's not about black and white, it's about right and wrong."

According to Sharpton, he was with the family of Michael Brown and Eric Garner when he learned about Walter Scott's shooting.

"One of the reasons we have not solved the problem of policing and crime is because many don't believe we can," Sharpton said.

Sharpton also spoke about the bill Sen. Marlon Kimpson is working on, mandating all South Carolina police officers wear body cameras.

"If you can make a state law on cameras on police, then the NAACP and others can nationally say, 'If they do it in South Carolina, what's the excuse in Illinois and New York?'" Sharpton said.

Church members said the attendance at Sunday service is around 250 people, but today an estimated 500 showed up.

In a release, Sharpton said he was "invited to preach in North Charleston, SC, on Sunday and to help lead a healing prayer vigil that afternoon by local clergy who have worked on this case from the beginning."

At 3 p.m., Sharpton will be leading the prayer vigil at the site of Scott's death at Remount and Craig Roads in North Charleston.

Officials have said that the National President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Dr. Charles Stelle, Jr., will also be in attendance at the church service and vigil.

Comeback Kerber Captures Maiden Family Circle Cup Title

Angelique Kerber found her best tennis right when she needed it. Sunday at the Family Circle Cup the German seeded No. 5 rallied from 1-4 down in the third set, beating American Madison Keys 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in a dramatic encounter.

It's a fourth WTA title for Kerber, who exacted revenge over the 20-year-old Illinois native after Keys had beaten her in the Eastbourne final last summer.

Kerber had a week to remember on Daniel Island: She came from a set down to win her first match against little-known Evgeniya Rodinain the second round, then shocked No. 3 seed and defending champion (as well as good friend) Andrea Petkovic in the semifinals on Saturday.

Keys led 4-1 in the deciding set before Kerber won the final six out of seven games, rallying for the victory. On match point, both players ended up on the green clay, a hard-fought point and match by each woman. Kerber keeps the German flag flying over Billie Jean King Stadium Court a year after countrywoman Petkovic won here. In 2009 Sabine Lisicki, another German, was champion, and Steffi Graf is a four-time winner.

"It's unbelievable," said world No. 16 said after the triumph. "I mean to win the title here in Charleston after really difficult weeks that I had… I'm feeling great. I had last year four finals and I didn't won one [sic], so it's great to win actually this tournament."

The two battled for nearly three hours on an overcast day on Billie Jean King Stadium Court, in a match that showcased the raw power of Keys and Kerber's relentless ball-retrieving skills. The 27-year-old German is now 3-1 against Keys in head-to-head encounters.

"I was in the third set just telling to myself, you know, 'Just go for it and just try,'" Kerber said. "And I did it. So I think that was the key at the end, that I just was going for it."

Keys couldn't overcome Kerber's consistency and pinpoint-placed drop shots, either.

"At the end she just didn't make any mistakes," a teary-eyed Keys told reporters. "And I started making a couple more, and that was really the match."

Continued Keys: "If you can't be first, I guess it's okay to be second. (This week is) definitely something that I'm proud of, and just (I'll) learn from it and, you know, use it towards the next couple of weeks on clay."

Kerber, a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist, won her first title in nearly 18 months. She also turned around a slow start to the 2015 season, having come into Charleston at 8-9.

"I worked very hard in the last few weeks, and every single match here I played very good," she said. "So I'm looking forward, and I think I have for sure the confidence that the next tournament will be going good, too."

On the doubles side, At least for another day, Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza remain perfect.

The top seeds at the Family Circle Cup won the doubles title on Sunday with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurak, the championship earning Mirza the No. 1 doubles ranking in the world.

It was a triumphant return for Hingis in Charleston, singles winner here in 1997 and 1999 as well as doubles champ in 1997. It marked the first time for the former world No. 1 in singles and doubles to play at the Cup since 2001.

By becoming No. 1, Mirza is the first Indian woman to reach that ranking. She's just the 33rd woman to hold the ranking since the WTA began them, back in 1984.

It's a 44th career doubles crown for Hingis and 26th for Mirza, who have collected winners' trophies in Indian Wells, Miami and now Charleston in their first three tournaments as partners. In all, they're an undefeated 14-0 in those three tournaments.

"For this to happen over three tournaments is pretty amazing," said Mirza, the 28 year old. "For me to have Martina on my side, she helped me in some very tough moments and it helps when she's been there, done that so many times, and she's a great champion, and she helped me through those tough moments, and it's a very special feeling."

For Dellacqua and Jurak, it was just a second tournament together, having debuted in Miami.

In 1997, Hingis became the world No. 1 singles player for the first time in her career after winning the Family Circle Cup title, as well. Hingis and Mirza took a last-minute wild card into the Cup, something they're happy now that they did.

"To come here to Charleston was almost like a bonus," said Hingis. "Coming here and doing the hand shake (after the final), it's like I'm very happy and I feel very honored to be along with Sania and helping her to become No. 1. I'm 34. So it's like everything is a bonus, you know. Whatever happens now and helping or doing it, it's just everything a great feeling."

Mirza will become No. 1 in doubles when the rankings are released on Monday.

"To come through all that after all these years, and I mean for my family, the sacrifices we put in. We all have a story," a reflective Mirza said. "And it all just seems worth it today, you know. And no one can take it away from me. I'm going to be the No. 1 in the world. Even 50 years from now I'll go down as the former world No. 1, and that's something that's very, very special."

North Charleston officer charged with murder in fatal shooting

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC -North Charleston Police Officer Michael Slager has been arrested and charged with murder for shooting Walter Scott after a traffic stop near Craig Street and Remount Road.

At a press conference Tuesday afternoon North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey announced that a young person came forward with video of the incident. Mayor Summey says the video is demonstrative of exactly what happened. The mayor said it was a bad decision made by one officer.


Officials with SLED provided the police with the video footage of the shooting and as a result North Charleston Police Officer Michael Slager will be charged with murder in connection with the shooting.

The North Charleston Police Chief said the video shows Scott being shot as he fled from the officer on foot.

Civil rights officials say the family wants community to stay calm.

Attorney David Aylor today issued the following statement regarding North Charleston Police Officer Michael Slager, the police officer involved with Saturday's shooting:  "Today, I withdrew my representation of Michael Slager. This is a terrible tragedy that has impacted our community."

Victim wants beating classified as hate crime

Twenty-six-year-old Devin Norman has fractures in the bones of his face and bruises to his eyes.

Corinth police say 22-year-old James Scott attacked Norman at the Walmart in Corinth on Friday.

"I never thought of him as the kind of violent type," said Norman.

Norman says Scott should be facing hate crime charges, since he used gay slurs and attacked him because of his sexual orientation. Norman says Scott grabbed him by the back of his neck and punched him after he tried walk away.

"I think that it's a travesty that there's an entire segment of abuse that's just swept under the rug," said Norman. "Yes, his assault was aggravated but it's entirely something else. Entirely. It was simply because of who I love."

Those close with Scott say Norman was trying to "out" him by posting private pictures and text messages the two men shared. Norman says he threatened to post the photos as a defense mechanism .

"I don't have them any more. I was bluffing, hoping that he would back away from me because his body language was so threatening, and violence scares me."

At this time, police do not believe it is not a hate crime. Officials say they will continue to investigate to determine if it does in fact qualify. Police plan on increasing the charges from simple assault to aggravated assault on Monday.

Scott is now out of jail on bond.
