My Blog December 7, 2015 Shootings in Chicago and Los Angeles

Today I Am showing you the footages of the shootings from Chicago on October 12, 2014 Last week's mass killing in San Bernardino, California, was an act of terrorism, law enforcement officials and President Barack Obama agree.

The following video is graphic and may be disturbing to some viewers. Viewer discretion is advised.*** Police released dashcam video of police shooting and killing Ronald Johnson.

Amid the fallout over the fatal police shooting of Laquan McDonald, activists and family members of another young African American killed by a Chicago officer are asking for an investigation.

Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy was fired Tuesday, exactly one week after dash-cam video showing the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald was released.

Well The Chicago Shooting in 2014 is out of the way, Last week's mass killing in San Bernardino, California, was an act of terrorism, law enforcement officials and President Barack Obama agree.

President Barack Obama's televised address on ISIS on Sunday night was meant to calm the public's escalating fears of terrorism, to chide 2016 candidates about explosive rhetoric over waging war and the place of Muslims in society and to defend his own efforts to combat the extremist group.

"We should put in place stronger screening for those who come to America without a visa so that we can take a hard look at whether they've traveled to war zones."
Obama also said that he had ordered the Departments of Homeland Security and State to review the visa program under which the female terrorist in San Bernardino originally came to this country as a fiancee of a U.S. citizen.

Fans question Ohio State quarterbacks suspension WOWK 13 Charleston, H...

Many people are upset to hear 20-year-old Ohio State starting quarterback JT Barrett will only be suspended one game after being arrested early Saturday morning on DUI charges.
When Barrett was cited with the misdemeanor offense, Buckeyes head coach Urban Myer decided to pull the sophomore out of the Nov. 7 game against Minnesota.
Those who spoke to 13 News said he should be suspended much longer.
"Want to try to hold their players to a certain standard. Him being the starting quarterback I don't think he gets the same punishment as the backup punter would get,"  football fan Derrick Moore said.
Because this is Barrett's first offense, he could face up to six months in jail, fines up to $1,000 and up to a three-year license suspension.
Nearby Kentucky and West Virginia have similar penalties, but many think Barrett should be held to a higher standard because many kids watch him play every Saturday.
"I know he is just a kid and i don't want to tear apart his future. But at the same time he needs to know that kids are watching him and he needs to be held to that standard as well," said Moore.
And now some are asking Ohio State to take another look to :review their polices and look at things different, the severity of it," said Lee Coward, another local football fan.

New video shows scenes of hostage rescue in Iraq CNN com

Amid the incessant crackle of gunfire, the soldiers usher the cowering men through darkened rooms.
The men are barefoot, most of them wearing long robes, some with large stains. As voices holler at them in the darkness to move quickly, they hurry across the debris-littered floor past the gun-wielding soldiers.
The frantic scene is from a newly released video showing parts of the mission in northern Iraq on Thursday in which U.S., Kurdish and Iraqi forces freed around 70 hostages from an ISIS-controlled prison.
The rescue of the hostages, who the Pentagon said were facing "imminent mass execution," cost the life of one of the U.S. soldiers taking part in the operation -- Master Sgt. Joshua L. Wheeler.
A member of the U.S. Army's elite Delta Force, Wheeler was the first American to die in combat in Iraq in nearly four years. His death has raised questions about the nature of U.S. involvement in the fight against ISIS.

Toddler finds gun in car, shoots grandmother in back

A Rock Hill grandmother is recovering after police say a 2-year-old boy found a gun inside a car and shot her in the back.

According to police, officers were called to the 1100-block of Stanley Drive Sunday afternoon around 1:24 p.m.

Officers met with a woman who says she picked up her great-nephew and was driving him around, with his grandmother in the passenger seat.

While she was driving, the young boy found a .357 revolver in the pouch on the back of the passenger seat. He then accidentally shot his 40-year-old grandmother through the passenger seat.

"She’s probably lucky that it hit the car seat first because it slowed down the momentum of the bullet," said Rock Hill Police Captain Mark Bollinger.

The family was traveling through the light at Ogden Road and Heckle Boulevard when the woman heard the gun go off.

She looked in the back seat and the boy had the gun in both hands and began to cry. That's when the grandmother said she'd been hit by the bullet in the back.

"It was in a pouch behind the passenger seat, somehow the child reached in and got ahold of it, that’s something our detectives are working on today," Bollinger said.

The woman reportedly drove to a family member's home along Stanley Drive and called police.

The grandmother was transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Main in Charlotte.

There was earlier confusion from police on the age of the boy and the relationship to the woman who was shot.

Investigators will turn over case findings to the solicitor’s office for possible weapons or other charges.

"There could be some child neglect, or some unlawful conduct towards a child charges based on the age of the child and leaving the gun within reaching distance of a young minor," Bollinger said.

While the injuries aren’t believed to be life threatening, Bollinger says the incident is a reminder for parents to keep their guns locked and stowed away from children.

"We encourage people to get gun locks, we give them away free here at the Rock Hill Police Department," Bollinger said.

Family members and neighbors did not want to talk about what happened.

    The case remains under investigation.

Vet reports dogs suffering from contagious cough after flood

Following the flooding, many pet owners are noticing their dogs aren't feeling very good. Veterinarians across the Lowcountry are reporting that dogs are catching a contagious cough.

"It's contagious enough that I'm willing to say that walking your dog around the neighborhood can expose your dog," said Dr. Brooke Hardymon, Bees Ferry Veterinarian Hospital.

Dr. Hardymon says the most common symptom of this upper respiratory infection is a hacking, harsh cough.

Dr. Hardymon says it can take anywhere between two to 14 days for symptoms to show up after a dog has been exposed.

The severity of the infection depend on how healthy the dog is and which organisms they were exposed to, according to Dr. Hardymon.

To treat the cough, many vets are prescribing a cough suppressant and antibiotic to kill the bacteria.

Dr. Hardymon says if the cough is left untreated, it can be dangerous.

"In dogs, especially older or young dogs, or dogs who are are exposed to the more nasty critters that caused this virus, they can develop life threatening pneumonia," said Dr. Hardymon.

This nasty cough isn't the only thing wreaking havoc on mans best friend, after the flood.

"We've also been seeing a lot of GI problems, so stomachs upset, some of these nasty little critters that live in stagnant water that these dogs, and even cats, are exposed to," said Dr. Hardymon.

The symptoms for this are diarrhea, loss of appetite and sometimes even vomiting.

"I think there's a lot of things we need to be made aware of with the flood waters and how they relate to our pets," said Dr. Hardymon.

Dr. Hardymon says dog owners need to continue to keep their pets of the flood water, because it's still contaminated.

Now that the water has gone down in some areas, doesn't been the germs are gone too.

"I think as far as toys or other items that have been heavily exposed to these flood water, for me, I would just get rid of them," said Dr. Hardymon.

If you suspect your dog is suffering from this cough or a stomach bug - it's best to take your pet to the vet.

"It hit Facebook, it's all over Facebook, everybody's posting it," said Paul Medley.

$2M winning lottery ticket sold in Craig County

One person in Craig County is holding a two million dollar lottery ticket.

The winner has not come forward yet but in a town like New Castle with less than 200 people, you can bet the word traveled fast.
"It's the biggest thing that's happened around here for the longest time and I've been with the store for 17 years and this is the biggest lottery winner we've ever had," said IGA Administrative Assistant Lynne Price.
"It hit Facebook, it's all over Facebook, everybody's posting it," said Paul Medley.
"Here we are in a very poor county and somebody won," laugh Jennifer Durling.
The winning ticket was sold at the IGA on Market Street in New Castle. It matched the first five numbers, only missing the Powerball. That would usually only win you a $1 Million. But the person paid an extra dollar for the Power Play and that doubled the prize to $2 Million.
"That's something you hear about, it's not something you see happen, especially somebody you know," said Durling.
While the winner has not been announced, a lot of people say they know who it is.
"He said "I won the lotto!" but we thought he was joking because he always jokes and kids around and he showed us the ticket and he said I'm gonna home and hide it now until tomorrow," said Linda Welch.
"It's good for him, he needs it," said Linda Welch, "He helps the community, he fixed on people's cars."
Now, others are trying their luck, hoping it will strike twice.
"I always split it with whoever sold it to me so we're hoping that she wins so I can split it with her," said Durling.
The store that sold the ticket will get a 10 thousand dollar bonus from the Virginia Lottery.
The winner has 180 days from Saturday's drawing date to claim their prize.

West Virginia bank robbery turns deadly

A bank robbery in Bluefield, West Virginia turned deadly Tuesday morning after police and the suspect exchanged gunshots.

Officers say Cedric Maurice Williams, 33, was heavily armed outside of the First Community Bank. They say Williams had an AK-47, a .45 caliber pistol and a .38 caliber revolver. Williams was killed and no officers were hit. CNN affiliate WVVA reports Williams is from Bluefield, West Virginia.

Investigators are now trying to connect the dots, including a bomb threat at another bank. They received a call around 9 a.m. near Raleigh Street at First Century Bank. A Virginia State police bomb squad was dispatched to the area and several buildings were evacuated. The squad detonated a suspicious package the bank.

Mercer County assistant prosecuting attorney John McGinnis says several witnesses and an individual are being questioned.

"Well as far as a second person in the bank, I don't know.  I can say that the police are questioning another individual at this time.  I don't know whether he is a suspect," McGinnis said.

My Blog August 25, 2015 Remebering IndyCar driver Justin Wilson

Hello My Friends, Today I Regret to announce that, IndyCar driver Justin Wilson has died of injuries suffered in a crash at Pocono Raceway. And This Video Starts With Me Spying the Neighbors across the road.

"This is a monumentally sad day for INDYCAR and the motorsports community as a whole," said Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Co., the parent of INDYCAR and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "Justin's elite ability to drive a race car was matched by his unwavering kindness, character and humility - which is what made him one of the most respected members of the paddock. As we know, the racing industry is one big family, and our efforts moving forward will be focused on rallying around Justin's family to ensure they get the support they need during this unbelievably difficult time."

Wilson had been in a coma and in critical condition after being airlifted from the track following a crash late in Sunday's IndyCar race. Race leader Sage Karam crashed ahead of the pack, scattering debris on the track. A large piece of Karam's nose cone bounced in the air, striking Wilson in the head as he drove by.

Wilson's car swerved left and struck the inside wall head-on. His car was surrounded by members of the IndyCar safety crew who got him to a local hospital.

"We're saddened to have lost such an exceptional driver, friend and role model to many in the INDYCAR community. Justin was one of the most versatile and talented drivers of the last 15 years, as evidenced by his wins in sports cars, Champ Car and INDYCAR. More important than his driving ability was his approachable personality, his calm spirit, and the respect he earned throughout the racing community for the tremendous person, friend, father and husband he was. Justin made innumerable friends and admirers throughout the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and INDYCAR communities. All of us at IMS extend our prayers and deepest sympathy to the Wilson family."

Doritos Bacon Cheddar Ranch JACKED 3D Review

Oh, Doritos JACKED. I’ve had such a love/hate relationship with you. Sometimes you cut my mouth open, sometimes your flavors are awesome, sometimes they are horrible, or sometimes, as in the case of Jalapeno Pepper Jack JACKED 3Ds, I wondered what the point was.
And now we have Doritos Bacon Cheddar Ranch JACKED 3D, first spotted in Canada, and now spotted by me at a Family Fare in two different bag sizes.  Given my past experience with JACKED products, I opted for the big bag.

Doritos Bacon Cheddar Ranch JACKED 3D: The Money Shot
Doritos Bacon Cheddar Ranch JACKED 3D! A 3D video in every bite….WHATEVER THAT MEANS
    doritosjackedbacon3d-04

    doritosjackedbacon3d-05

Doritos Bacon Cheddar Ranch JACKED 3D contain bacon fat, which is a new trend I must applaud. Why did it take so long for companies to start adding actual fat to these chips they want to taste like meat? I dunno, but I love that they are doing it now.

    doritosjackedbacon3d-06

I opened this bag of Doritos Bacon Cheddar Ranch JACKED 3D and sniffed – cheesy aroma, and a bit of smoke. Honestly, I wonder if its even possible to screw up a flavor that is called Bacon Cheddar Ranch. Then again, I’ve seen basic flavors like Hot Wing screwed up, so why would I be surprised?

    doritosjackedbacon3d-07

I popped a bunch of these Doritos Bacon Cheddar Ranch JACKED 3D into my mouth and crunched…and I have to admit, not bad! Not bad at all. Not GREAT, mind you, but not BAD.
The crunch was familiar from my past JACKED experiences – a big mouthful of corn chip, and because of this triangular shape, these were super crunchy. I didn’t hate that. The seasoning was…inconsistent. The initial flavor was HEAVY of the cheese and spices – and, to me, distinctly cheddar over any sort of nacho flavor. These had a sharp cheese flavor. The savory cheese flavor was, to be honest, a bit overwhelming. But, given the chip construction, I thought it matched up well. For anyone WANTING bold zesty cheese flavor, these had that.
The bacon flavor was there, but mainly in the form of smokiness. I got plenty of that as I chewed, so I guess my mind could imagine bacon flavor there too. You know what, I relent – yes, these tasted bacon-y. The cheddar bacon combo was there.
But ranch? non-existent. Sure, there were som zesty spices, but I wanted the ranch to really give an additional sour kick on the back end, and I didn’t get that. The chip WAS creamy, but that I attributed more to the cheese than anything else.
The combo? As I said, not bad – pretty strong in flavor as I’ve come to expect from the JACKED line, and I did like these way better than the Jalapeno Pepper Jack version. At least this flavor DID taste somewhat like the description. Yeah, I’d probably eat these again.
Still not a super fan, but if I had to rank these on a 10 scale, I’d give them a solid 6.5.

Guinness Rich Chili Burts Potato Chips Review

Guinness Rich Chili Burts Potato Chips: The Money Shot
The Money Shot I found these Guinness Rich Chili Burts Potato Chips at my local Harris Teeter, and I was completely unaware that Guinness Beer made chips / lent out their brand to chip companies. They are, apparently, a new thing – Foodbeast covered them a while back. Beer flavored chips? Or chili flavored beer chips? Hmmm. These are intriguing.
Guinness Rich Chili Burts Potato Chips
BURTS is apparently the actual brand of these Guinness Rich Chili Potato Chips, NOT Guinness. Never heard of Burts, and I know all the UK folk out there want to kill me right now. They look good though – a thick cut kettle chip, I guess?

Guinness Rich Chili Burts Potato Chips

Guinness Rich Chili Burts Potato Chips contain Barley Malt Extract Powder, which is sort of exciting. I am a little confused – the UK version of these is apparently called RICH BEEF CHILLI, and this does not have “beef” in the name or the ingredients. Vegan beer chips? Dunno. I do like the use of sunflower oil, however.
Guinness Rich Chili Burts Potato Chips

When I opened up this bag of Guinness Rich Chili Burts Potato Chips, stuck my nose in and inhaled, I smelled…a tiny bit of sweetness? A meaty smell, although more vegetarian? I can’t explain it…this sort of smelled like a pot of stewed lentils? Is that the most bizarre description I can give these chips?
The appearance of the chips was nice – these were thick cut, with a kettle cooked look to them. Each chip was heavily dusted with brown powder. Was it powdered Guinness? I don’t think so.
Guinness Rich Chili Burts Potato Chips

I popped a bunch of these Guinness Rich Chili Burts Potato Chips into my mouth and chewed, and they…well, they didn’t REALLY taste like beer at all! *disappointed face* Then again, I’m not sure what I expected.
Let me start by saying these didn’t taste BAD – in fact, objectively, if you didn’t tell me what these chips were named, I’d say these tasted pretty good! There was a general savoriness to the chip – I picked up a darker smoky flavor that was sort of meaty. I got definite notes of onion and the tang/sweetness of the tomato powder. There was the subtle but deep flavor of jalapeno chilis, but more like the flavor you get when you blister jalapenos over a flame. Spice wise, not much – a TINY TINY bit of tingle. Small bit of paprika.
If this sounds like an awful description, it’s because these chips are a tough one to describe. In a lot of ways, they tasted a LOT like plenty of other potato chips I’ve had from the UK – they all seem to have this dark smoky semi-meaty flavor as the base flavor. Was there a beer taste? You know, I did catch a subtle flavor of beer in there – it reminded me of how you can taste that beer bitterness when you eat beer cheese. that same bitterness was noticeable here.
Overall? Meh. Like I said, these weren’t bad, but they certainly didn’t taste like Guinness, and they didn’t have a flavor that made me want to rush right out and buy another bag. Next time…pass.

    Boddington's Pub Ale Review

    \

Boddingtons Brewery was a regional brewery in Manchester, England which owned pubs throughout the North West. Boddingtons was best known for Boddingtons Bitter (Boddies), a straw-golden, hoppy bitter which was one of the first beers to be packaged in cans containing a widget, giving it a creamy draught-style head. In the 1990s, the beer was promoted as The Cream of Manchester in a popular advertising campaign credited with raising Manchester's profile. Boddingtons became one of the city's most famous products after Manchester United and Coronation Street.[2]

Whitbread bought Boddingtons Brewery in 1989 and Boddingtons Bitter received an increased marketing budget and nationwide distribution. Boddingtons achieved its peak market share in 1997 and at the time was exported to over forty countries. Boddingtons beer brands are now owned by the global brewer Anheuser–Busch InBev which acquired the Whitbread Beer Company in 2000. Strangeways Brewery closed in 2004 and production of pasteurised (keg and can) Boddingtons was moved to Samlesbury in Lancashire. Production of the cask conditioned beer moved to Hydes Brewery in Moss Side, Manchester until it was discontinued in 2012, ending the beer's association with the city.

Boddingtons Pub Ale is a A higher ABV version of Boddingtons Draught Bitter, brewed since 1993 for export markets. It was available in the United Kingdom from 1995–6 as Boddingtons Export. It has a 4.6% Alcohol by volume.

    Cheerwine Soda Rewiew

    logo

Cheerwine is a cherry-flavored soft drink produced by the Carolina Beverage Corporation of Salisbury, North Carolina. It has been produced since 1917 by "the oldest continuing soft drink company still run by the same family".

When the Maysville Syrup Company of Maysville, Kentucky went bankrupt in 1917, L.D. Peeler and other invested businessmen moved the company to North Carolina and renamed it the Carolina Beverage Corporation. That same year, Peeler purchased a recipe for a cherry flavored soda from a Saint Louis flavor salesman, which eventually became Cheerwine. Though it had been around since 1917, Cheerwine first became a registered trademark in 1926.

Cheerwine has a mildly sweet flavor with strong cherry notes, most notably black cherry; is burgundy-colored, and has an unusually high degree of carbonation compared to other soft drinks. The product was named for its color and taste; the company website states that "it made sense to name a burgundy-red, bubbly, cherry concoction—Cheerwine." The "Retro Cheerwine" variant is sold in glass bottles and is sweetened with cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup. Despite its name, Cheerwine is not really a wine and contains no alcohol.

The company also markets Cheerwine flavored ice cream, sherbet, and cream bars, mainly in Food Lion, a Salisbury-based supermarket chain. A commercially-baked Cheerwine cake, based on an old Southern recipe, became available through a Salisbury-based company in 2008.

In 2009, the company began a re-branding campaign designed to revamp the drink's image, especially among younger consumers. The re-branding called for a redesign of the Cheerwine packaging, with a new, retro-style logo based on an early Cheerwine logo.

In 2010, Cheerwine partnered with the North Carolina-based donut company, Krispy Kreme, and released a limited-offered Cheerwine flavored donut on July 1 of that year. It was sold only at select grocery stores for the month of July, and at the Salisbury Krispy Kreme. The Cheerwine doughnut returned again in July 2011.

In 2010, Canton, Ohio-based Old Carolina Barbecue became the first restaurant chain in Ohio to offer Cheerwine as a fountain drink. By 2014 Cheerwine-based products including iced  slushi, Cheerwine cakes and floats had become a signature part of the Old Carolina concept.

Morgan Shepherd ran an entry in the NASCAR Busch Series (now the Nationwide Series) in the mid-1990s with Cheerwine sponsorship.

Cheerwine is sometimes mixed with Captain Morgan to make a drink called the "Whining Pirate."

Cheerwine is available in much of the southeastern United States, from West Virginia south to Florida, but is better known in the Carolinas and Virginia. Other spots to find Cheerwine are the many "specialty soda" stores throughout the country. Currently, Cheerwine is also being sold in Sheetz convenience stores in Pennsylvania and Ohio. In addition, it is also available in Norway.

In April 2005, other regions of the United States began to bottle Cheerwine, mainly through Pepsi distributors.

On March 9, 2011, the New York Times Diner's Journal referred to "The Expanding Cult of Cheerwine." On April 5, 2011, the company announced plans for nationwide distribution by 2017, which would be the product's 100th anniversary. The same day, the company also introduced a new advertising campaign, "Born in the South. Raised in a glass."At the time, Cheerwine was available in 12 percent of the nation. Radio commercials include "The Caper", where criminals left everything from a store except Cheerwine; and "Battle of the Bulge", in which a soldier from the Salisbury area has two bottles sent to him during World War II and gives one to his friend.

Also in April 2011, Cheerwine announced it was searching for a woman to represent the company as "Miss Cheerwine." Candidates had be 21 to 25 years old and live in Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia. A company spokesperson stated, "We’re looking for a poised, enthusiastic young woman who can help us spread the legend and get Cheerwine into the hands of our fans with charm, confidence, sweetness and a sense of fun." On June 3, 2011, Spencer Cummings, named the first Miss Cheerwine, began the Miss Cheerwine Summer Legend Tour.

On October 18, 2011, Cheerwine announced plans to partner with Pepsi Beverages Co. in Florida, Atlanta, and Memphis, Tennessee. The same week, the company began using glass bottles to distribute the "Original 1917 Formula" with sugar, as well as introducing 12-pack cans.

On June 16, 2014, Birmingham's Buffalo Rock Co. announced Cheerwine distribution in Alabama, western Georgia and the Florida panhandle. This adds about 6.5 million potential new customers to their distribution footprint.

Cheerwine has sponsored the North Carolina band the Avett Brothers on tour.

Woman scales State House flagpole, removes Confederate flag

The Confederate flag was temporarily removed from in front of the South Carolina State House Saturday morning.

A small activist group out of North Carolina decided to take action today to "do what the SC legislature has thus far neglected to do," according to a news release.

Thirty-year-old Brittany Ann Byuarim Newsome of Raleigh, NC was about halfway up the more than 30-foot steel flagpole just after dawn Saturday when State Capitol police told her to come down. Instead, she continued climbing and removed the flag before returning to the ground.

Newsome and another man, 30-year-old James Ian Tyson of Charlotte, who had entered the wrought-iron fence surrounding the flag were arrested.

"We removed the flag today because we can't wait any longer," Newsome said. "We can't continue like this another day. It's time for a new chapter where we are sincere about dismantling white supremacy and building toward true racial justice and equality. Every day that the flag is up there is an endorsement of hate.”

Mobile users, tap here to see mugshots of the accused and more photos of the removal/arrest.

“We are regular human beings, daughters, sons, mothers, fathers, Carolinians, educators, and activist[s] —both black and white— who believe in the fundamental idea of humanity," a statement from the unnamed group said. "The flag we removed is one of the most familiar remnants of white supremacy that supports the idea that there is still a reigning group of individuals who control our freedom, while tacitly supporting white Americans when they commit heinous and racially charged hate crimes against Blacks and People of Color. We took this task in our own hands because our, President, Governor, mayors, legislators, and councilmen had a moral duty to remove the flag but failed to act. We could not sit by and watch the victims of the Charleston Massacre be laid to rest while the inspiration for their deaths continue to fly above their caskets."

“We call all people to join us and stand as a united front, to take an active role towards liberating ourselves through the dismantlement of the largest form of our oppression, white supremacy. Let this day be the start towards true human progress.”

The group had hoped the flag, which is protected by state law, would be absent from the pole for a planned flag supporter rally scheduled for later Saturday morning but that wasn't the case. A new flag was raised again a short time later.

A South Carolina Department of Public Safety spokeswoman said Newsome and Tyson have been charged with defacing a monument. They were released on $3000 bond each, both are allowed to leave the state but must return for their next appearance scheduled for July 27. The charge carries a a prison sentence up to three years and a $5,000 fine.
A crowd fund set up to pay for Newsroom's bail and legal expenses has been set up on the website Indigo. The "Bail for Brie Newsome" fund had raised more than $81,750 in ten hours.

Calls for removing the flag have been renewed since nine black churchgoers were killed in what police characterized as a racist attack at a Charleston church last week.

    Cuomo: 'Nightmare finally over'

David Sweat, the second of two inmates who escaped from a New York prison, has been shot, according to authorities.

The shooting occurred in Constable, NY - two miles south of Canada. It was roughly about 30 miles west of the Clinton Correctional Facility. Police have not released the condition of Sweat, but reports say he was shot twice and has been transported to the hospital.

According to reports, Officer Sgt. Jay Cook of the New York State Police shot Sweat after he tried to run away. Sweat didn't appear to be armed.

Sweat, 35, is a convicted murderer and escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, NY, with fellow inmate Richard Matt, 49, on June 6. Matt was shot and killed near Malone, NY, during a massive manhunt that combed the upstate wilderness.

Police believed Sweat was with him but had no evidence to confirm it. Police had said for days Sweat was confined, and it was just a matter of time before they uncovered his position. They had been using search dogs to track his scent, but the dogs could not locate it.

State police reported the two fugitives were trying to make their way to Canada. Police faced concerns that the men may have armed themselves with hunting rifles after finding DNA evidence in a cabin near Mountain View, NY, which is 14 miles from where Matt was fatally shot.

Matt was said to have stolen a 20-gauge shotgun from a cabin. Police said he was found to be suffering from what they believed to be food poisoning. An autopsy showed he had been shot in the head three times.

The cabin was equipped with a television, and authorities think the pair may have been able to watch news coverage of the manhunt.

The two escaped killers - described as extremely dangerous by New York State Police - are believed to have used power tools to escape the prison. The fugitives entered a two-foot pipe in the prison and exited from a manhole on the other side of the jail's walls.

NPR reported the governments of New York and Vermont worked closely in tandem during the search for Matt and Sweat. Some schools in the area of the prison canceled classes both due to safety and because police set up roadblocks, shutting down some routes to class.

The escape from the maximum-security facility has prompted authorities to seek for accomplices. Cuomo said the feat would have required assistance.

One theory swirling around the breakout involves a prison worker who worked regularly with Matt and Sweat.

Joyce Mitchell, a sewing instructor in the prison's tailor shop, was arrested Friday, June 12, and charged with helping the two escape. She pleaded not guilty in court on June 15.

Mitchell, 51, of Dickinson Center, New York, faces felony charges of aiding escape, promoting prison contraband and providing material assistance. Law enforcement sources said she gave hacksaw blades to the inmates, as well as eyeglasses with lights attached to them.

Investigators said Mitchell had a history of improper behavior with the prisoners, and she allegedly entered a sexual relationship with Matt.

An anonymous source told CNN that the escapees were planning to kill Mitchell's husband. The prison worker reportedly backed out of aiding the fugitives escape because she said she still loved her husband.

Investigators said that Mitchell was going to drive the convicted murderers seven hours away before she got cold feet.

According to NBC News, Joyce admitted herself to the hospital on June 6 because of "nerves." She was arraigned on charges in connection to the case June 12.

Severe weather causes major damage across Michigan

The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down in Washtenaw County, specifically the Freedom Township area.

NWS issued a Tornado Warning for that area just before 1:30 a.m. and it ran until 2:15 a.m.

Officials from the NWS do have to go out and survey the damage, but they said there was circulation that reached to the ground, and there was damage consistent with a tornado.

A confirmed tornado touched down in Millington, Mich., located in Tuscola County, about 80 miles north of Detroit. At least four homes were destroyed in that area. There was also another probably tornado in Sanilac County, and near Manchester in Washtenaw County.

This comes after a confirmed EF-1 tornado touched down for about 10 minutes in Portland, Mich. on Monday afternoon . It caused extensive damage in the town, located about 20 miles northwest of Lansing.

Officials say 70 homes, three churches and a dozen businesses sustained serious damage.

In all, there could be 4-5 tornadoes that touched down between Monday afternoon and early Tuesday morning across the state. Usually, according to Rexroth, Michigan sees 8-9 tornadoes in an entire year.

Damage from the tornadoes and severe storms across the region include localized flooding, uprooted trees, downed power lines and damage to buildings.

Roof to appear on 9 murder counts; Charleston seeks unity

As Dylann Storm Roof awaited his first hearing on nine charges of murder, the people of Charleston sought Friday to repudiate whatever a gunman would hope to accomplish by killing black community leaders inside one of the nation's most important African-American churches.

"A hateful person came to this community with some crazy idea he'd be able to divide, but all he did was unite us and make us love each other even more," Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. said as he described plans for an evening vigil at a sports arena near the church.
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said the state will "absolutely" want the death penalty for Roof, who opened fire after sitting through a Wednesday night Bible study session inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
A steady stream of people brought flowers and notes and shared somber thoughts at a growing memorial in front of the church, known as "Mother Emanuel" for its historic place among the sanctuaries of black society.
Roof, 21, had complained while getting drunk on vodka recently that "blacks were taking over the world" and that "someone needed to do something about it for the white race," according to Joey Meek, who tipped the FBI when he saw his friend on surveillance images.
Apprehended in North Carolina after a motorist recognized him and helped alert police, Roof was shackled, handcuffed and returned in a bulletproof vest Thursday to Charleston, where a bond hearing was scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday. Most such hearings are conducted by video link from the county jail where he is being held.
In addition to the nine murder counts, Roof is charged with possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, police said Friday. That's a common charge in South Carolina when a gun is involved, whether it was legally owned or not.
The victims included a state senator who doubled as the church's lead pastor, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney; as well as several other pastors and church elders, a library manager, high school coaches, a government administrator, a college enrollment counselor and a recent college graduate - six women and three men who initially welcomed Roof into the church.
"The suspect entered the group and was accepted by them, as they believed that he wanted to join them in this Bible study," she said. Then, "he became very aggressive and violent."
President Barack Obama pointed to lax gun controls as a factor in the slayings, and complained that Washington politics have shut down efforts to require universal background checks for gun purchases. The candidates campaigning to replace him largely avoided mentioning guns at all.
Roof said he used birthday money from his parents to buy a .45 Glock pistol before the attack, Meek said. He must have hidden the weapon, because Charleston County Coroner Rae Wilson said he didn't initially appear threatening to the church members.
Meek called the FBI after recognizing Roof in the surveillance footage, down to the stained sweatshirt he wore while they played Xbox videogames the morning of the attack.
"I didn't THINK it was him. I KNEW it was him," Meek told The Associated Press after being interviewed by investigators.
It's not clear whether Roof had any connection to the 16 white supremacist organizations operating in South Carolina, but he appears to be a "disaffected white supremacist," based on his Facebook page, said Richard Cohen, president of Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama.
On his Facebook page, Roof displayed the flags of defeated white-ruled regimes, posing with a Confederate flags plate on his car and wearing a jacket with stitched-on flag patches from apartheid-era South Africa and Rhodesia, which is now black-led Zimbabwe.
His previous record includes misdemeanor drug and trespassing charges.
Spilling blood inside a black church - especially "Mother Emanuel," founded in 1816 - evoked painful memories nationwide, a reminder that black churches so often have been the targets of racist violence.
A church founder, Denmark Vesey, was hanged after trying to organize a slave revolt in 1822, and white landowners burned the church in revenge, leaving parishioners to worship underground until after the Civil War. The congregation rebuilt and grew stronger, eventually winning campaigns for voting rights and political representation.
Pinckney recalled his church's history in a 2013 sermon, saying "we don't see ourselves as just a place where we come to worship, but as a beacon and as a bearer of the culture."
"What the church is all about," Pinckney said, is the "freedom to be fully what God intends us to be and have equality in the sight of God. And sometimes you got to make noise to do that. Sometimes you may have to die like Denmark Vesey to do that."
Pinckney, 41, was a married father of two and a Democrat who spent 19 years in the South Carolina legislature after he was first elected at 23, becoming the youngest member of the House.
The other victims were Cynthia Hurd, 54; Tywanza Sanders, 26; Myra Thompson, 59; Ethel Lance, 70; Susie Jackson, 87; and the reverends DePayne Middleton Doctor, 49; Sharonda Singleton, 45; and Daniel Simmons Sr., 74.
U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said the attack would be investigated as a hate crime.
Contributors include Alex Sanz, Meg Kinnard and David Goldman in Charleston, South Carolina; Mitch Weiss in Columbia, South Carolina; Jay Reeves in Birmingham, Alabama; Eric Tucker in Washington; and Jacob Jordan in Atlanta.
